External storage on SSD

Hi-
Been using Cascade to tether with an iPad for quite a while. Seeing all the new features and it seems I should be able to save images directly to an external SSD, rather than the iPad or the camera itself. Anyone got any idea goes to do this? It would make a big difference to my work flow.

Hello,

Sorry for the slow reply - it was originally posted into an unmonitored section of the forum. I’ve moved it to the right place.

To do this:

  1. Connect your SSD to your iPad, then go to the “Photos” section of the app and tap “Add Location…”.

  2. Pick your SSD (or, more likely, a folder on it) in the picker that appears.

  3. The SSD will then appear in Cascable as an available storage location. It should disappear and re-appear automatically as you disconnect and reconnect your SSD.

  4. You can now manually copy images to that folder on your SSD.

  5. To automatically copy images from your camera as they’re shot, tap the ‘+’ button at the bottom of the storage list to create a Storage Link. Choose the camera as the source and your SSD as the destination. Once created, images will be transferred from the camera straight to the SSD, skipping the iPad’s internal storage.

Is it possible to hardwire to a usb hub and save files to an external ssd? I have been storing a copy of photos on my ipad, but would like to simultaneously store them to an external ssd, not copy them at a later time frame…thought a powered usb hub might work?

On youtube search for camera hack cascable, it’s possible with a usb-c hub

Hello!

Yes, with a decent USB-C dongle/hub, this should work great. For your workflow, you’ll need to:

  • Plug the hub into the iPad such that the iPad is the “host” device - i.e., the hub is delivering power to the iPad if it’s a power-delivering model.

  • Connect your SSD and camera to the hub. Note that some cameras try to charge via USB-C when switched off, which the hub might not like.

  • In Cascable Studio, tap “Add Folder…” and choose a target folder on your SSD.

  • Once you have the camera connected and the folder added in Cascable Studio, tap the ‘+’ button at the bottom of the list of storage locations to create a Storage Link. Choose your camera as the source and the folder on your SSD as the destination and create the link. Once set up, images will be copied automatically from the camera to the SSD when they’re shot. You can also make a chain from the camera to Cascable Studio’s “On This iPad” location, then from that to the SSD if you want them automatically copied to multiple places at once.
