Cascable Studio Wi-Fi tethering with my Canon EOS R is extremely slow.
I wanted to try the free version before purchasing the full version, but my experience with Wi-Fi tethering has been disappointing so far. Even on a stable 400 Mbps Wi-Fi connection, performance is very sluggish, so it does not appear to be a network speed issue.
The live view on my iPad Pro M5 exhibits significant lag. When I move the camera, it typically takes 2–3 seconds for the image to update on the iPad, making the feature difficult to use in practice.
Does the Pro version offer any improvements to Wi-Fi tethering performance, or should I expect the same behavior? If the lag is similar, I would be hesitant to purchase the full version.
For reference, I am using the latest version of Cascable Studio (7.3) on an iPad Pro M5. Please let me know if there are any settings I should adjust, known limitations with the Canon EOS R, or any planned performance improvements.
We don’t artificially add latency in the free version — it’d be a terrible demo!
Latency and bandwidth are two separate things, and having a high bandwidth connection doesn’t necessarily mean it’s low-latency. There’s also a decent amount of latency within the camera that we can’t really do anything about.
There’s a few of things you can do to try and improve latency:
Directly connect the camera and your iPad together using the camera’s WiFi mode that has the camera generate its own network. This’ll skip any latency in your other setup.
Turn off the camera’s Bluetooth fully, especially if you’re on a 2.4 GHz network.
In Cascable Studio’s settings → Remote Control, turn on the “Prefer High Framerate” setting. This will reduce the resolution of live view to get more performance.
Connecting via USB-C will also skip any wireless latency entirely.
