Manual focusing by turning the focus ring on the lens

I’ve been using Cascable Pro on iPad Pro for 2 months now. There is one thing I couldn’t figure it out and I don’t know if this function exist or not. Basically I want to do manual focus by turning the focus ring on my lens. I saw there is such thing in Cascable Pro Webcam - Cascable: Focusing Setup Tips & Tricks. In the last section. I tried the follow this note, but it doesn’t seem to work.

My camera is Nikon Z6, and ipad is M2 Ipad Pro.

If I’m understanding you correctly, you just turn your lens to manual focus. Then Cascable knows it’s manual mode.

What I want to do is to setup manual focus mode in the camera, open up Cascable Pro on iPad, then turn the focus ring on my lens to adjust the focus so I can view the adjustment in Cascable Pro on Ipad display. Capture One can do this. It will be a tremendously help if this function exists in Cascable iPad.

in Cascable: Focusing Setup Tips & Tricks
“To use manual focusing, simply switch your camera into manual focusing mode before you connect it to Cascable Pro Webcam. When your camera is set to manual focusing, turn the focus ring on your lens to adjust the focus point until you’re nice and sharp. When in manual focusing mode, you won’t be able to use click-to-focus in Cascable Pro Webcam.”
This is what I want. I followed this instruction in Cascable Pro on my iPad. It doesn’t seem to work.

Hello,

Manual focus is fully supported by Cascable — in fact, if the camera is in manual focus mode, there’s not a lot we can do to stop it.

However, the Z series of cameras do have a second set of settings that’s used when connected to apps like Cascable. If your AF/MF setting is a physical switch on the lens then you just need to make sure that switch is set to MF, and that setting overrides all. If the lens doesn’t have such a switch and it’s a software toggle, then that should be available in Cascable - you’ll find it by tapping the ‘…’ button in Cascable’s remote control after connecting the camera to show the menu, then find the Focus Mode setting.

If the camera doesn’t allow switching to MF via Cascable and it’s automatically engaging AF when being connected Cascable, you’ll need to toggle the setting on the camera after connecting to it.

I know you can use Focus Drive to manually dial the focus point when focuse mode is set to AF-S. But the way to adjust focus in Focus Drive is very time consuming, you need to cloick a few times to get what you need. I wish there is a way, user can manually focuse by turning the focus ring on the lens instead of using Cascable → Focus Drive. It would be much fast by turning the focus ring on the lens. Right now turning the focus ring on the lens doesn’t do anything once Cascable ipad connect to the camera. I guess this is the way Cascable app was designed. Capture One has this fuction when connect to the camera, user can still turning lens ring to do the focus. Thank you for the info anyway!!!

Hello,

Unfortunately I think you misunderstand my post.

You can absolutely turn the focus ring to focus the camera with Cascable, but the camera needs to be in MF mode. You might need to explicitly put the camera into MF mode after connecting to it.

I have tried all my three lenses, set MF in the nikon z6 body and M in the lens, and MF mode in Cascable app (iPad Pro M2), Unfortunately, turning the focus ring on the lens doesn’t do anything. Those lenses are Z 24-70mm f4.0, Z 105mm f2.8 and Z 70-200mm f2.8.
